When Nikon introduced the AF-S 14-24/2.8 zoom lens in 2007, they set a new benchmark regarding ultra wide lenses, at least regarding sharpness, by outresolving even some of the best primes in this segment. On the other hand, with a significant amount of distortion at the wide end, the tendency to produce flare spots even in the most unexpected situations and most of all the lack of a filter thread, it’s not everybodies darling.

At PMA 2010 Nikon surprised with another pro grade ultra wide-angle lens, the new AF-S 16-35/4 VR. One stop slower than its sister lens it features optical stabilization instead and a larger focal range. Given the superb sharpness of the 14-24 the expectations are on a very high level for this lens, too. We have reviewed the lens on our FX camera already, so let’s see how it performs on our 10 megapixel DX test camera (D200), where it behaves like a moderate wide-angle to normal lens.

Most new all-in-ones are evolutionary changes to what’s gone before, but occasionally some changes are more revolutionary. Touch panels have been growing in popularity on recent models from HP, Epson and Lexmark, but Canon, with its PIXMA MG6150, is the first to build the panel into the lid of an all-in-one.

Canon has gone for the full, high-gloss, piano black look that has a lot of style, until you start to smudge it with your fingerprints. And you will smudge it, as you use the printer’s control panel. The top surface has a control ring indented into it, along with an OK button. The only physical button is for power and the 75mm colour LCD, which sits flush with the scanner’s top surface, can be raised up by pressing a full width bar directly behind it. You can then angle the screen as you like.

When it comes to standard zooms for crop cameras, Nikon offers a range of stabilized, but not overly fast lenses, while on the other hand their high end AF-S 17-55/2.8 offers a large aperture and superb build quality, but it lacks VR and carries a rather hefty price tag. Unlike Canon, which offers the undisputed king in this lens class with the EF-S 17-55/2.8 USM IS, Nikon does not offer a lens that combines speed, stabilization and high end performance in a single lens.

Canon’s X0D series has throughout its life appealed to a wide range of photographers, from enthusiasts and semi-pros through to some pros who appreciated having a lightweight option. Each model offered a high enough specification (usually in terms of build quality and AF sophistication) to ensure it was both aspirational and attainable for users who had out-grown their Rebel/XX0D series. However, the feature set always left a sizeable gap below the company’s full-blown ‘pro’ models.

The arrival of the EOS 7D, with its highly configurable 19-point AF system and 8 frames per second continuous shooting capability changed much of this – here was a ‘mini 1D’ that drew the attention of many people who previously would have been X0D customers. However, the price tag (a 30% premium over the 50D at launch) pushed it beyond the reach of most people who weren’t making at least a bit of money from their photography.

The introduction of the Panasonic GH1 in March of 2009 caused a small shock wave. A DSLR-type camera, in which photo and video are combined effortlessly, was previously unheard of. The competition was left looking on, and Panasonic thus got a solid grip on the heavily competitive camera market. In the meantime, Panasonic has listened well to its supporters, and hit the design table once more. The end result was shown to the world press on the first day of the Photokina 2010: the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH2.
