Following its release, Nikon proudly claimed its D3000 to be the best selling digital SLR in Europe. Its successor therefore, the D3100, has the unenviable job of avoiding dropping the ball. No pressure then.

Fortunately for its maker and those looking for an affordable first DSLR, initial impressions are good. The D3100 incorporates a DX format CMOS sensor and is targeted at those trading up from a compact or bridge camera for the first time, as well as families wanting a decent capture device for pics of their tots.

3D is everywhere – in the cinema, on Blu-ray, and, thanks to Sky, on the airwaves. Not one to miss a trick, Fuji is betting that photographers are crying out for 3D in their still images, with the unique, twin-lens, twin-sensor FinePix W3. Slide down the cover and everything’s been doubled – each image is captured twice, from slightly different perspectives, then merged in the camera to produce a stereoscopic image. But at £350 the W3 isn’t exactly cheap – it needs to perform flawlessly to justify its price.

The top end of the digital compact camera is a pretty exclusive place. You can count the number of semi-pro advanced compacts on the fingers of one hand, and still have a digit or two left over to scratch your head with as you figure out how long it’ll take you to save up for one. The yardstick against which all other semi-pro compacts are measured is the Canon PowerShot G series, which is celebrating its tenth birthday this year. We’ve yet to review the latest example, the G12, but we took a look at the G11 this time last year and were suitably impressed. A more recent contender is Panasonic’s Lumix LX series, of which the latest example is the excellent LX5, which we saw a few months ago. More recent still is Samsung’s first foray into this area of the market, the impressive EX1.

The Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM was introduced back in June 1993. Price-wise it sits in-between the extremely expensive EF 50mm f/1.2 USM L and the “cheap” EF 50mm f/1.8 II. There have been calls in forums out there that the lens is outdated by now (e.g. due to the non-circular aperture) but so far Canon had different priorities. However, the lens has received excellent scores in our APS-C test so the situation doesn’t seem to be desperate anyway. However, let’s have a look whether it can convince us on a full format body as well.

The segment of ultra fast primes has not seen much attention from Nikon for many years. Once famous for lenses like the Noct Nikkor 58/1.2, the fast options available with AF drive were rather limited and, with the exception of the recently modified AF-S 50/1.4, either a little dated or even discontinued like the AF-D 28/1.4.

In 2010 Nikon finally recognized the gap and introduced 3 new or updated ultra fast Nikkor primes, the shortest (and probably most unexpected) one being the AF-S 24mm f/1.4. Regarding its street price of 1800 EUR/2200 USD as of the time of this review it’s obviously not targeted at the consumer market.

Even though this is a full frame (FX) lens, it’s certainly an attractive option for DX shooters, too, since its angle of view comes very close to a classic 35mm lens on these cameras. So, let’s have a look how the lens performs on our 10 Megapixel DX test camera (D200).
