Just over a year ago I reviewed the Pen E-P1, Olympus’s first foray into the compact system camera market. The review was generally positive, but I criticised the camera’s lack of a built-in flash and relatively high price compared to contemporary DSLRs. Olympus must have been paying attention, because it has recently launched the third model in its Pen E series, the Pen E-PL1, a cheaper, simpler version of the design which does include a neat pop-up flash gun.

Long-zoom compact cameras, also often called travel cameras, are a big growth area of the digital camera market. Nearly all of the main manufacturers now produce compact cameras with zoom lenses of 10x magnification or greater, models such as Panasonic’s TZ8 (£210) and TZ10 (£270), Samsung’s WB650 (£240), the Canon SX210 IS (£240), Olympus mju 9000 (£240) and Ricoh CX3  (£300) and Fujifilm’s new F300 EXR (£329, review coming soon) are all big sellers. Increasingly these cameras are being equipped with other advanced features such as manual exposure options, high-speed shooting, HD video recording, built-in GPS or travel guides being added as the brands vie for a bigger share of the market. As a result these travel cameras are becoming ever more complicated and ever more expensive, factors which may discourage many potential buyers.

Whether you call them “interchangeable lens cameras”, “mirrorless system cameras”, or my current favourite “compact system cameras”, a new type of camera was born with the launch of the Panasonic Lumix G1 in 2008. Olympus joined in early last year with its popular Pen E-P1, and this year Samsung and Sony  have both jumped on the bandwagon. However they will have found to their consternation that Ricoh was already there, having launched its innovative but rather strange GXR system in November last year.

It’s been a little over four years since Sony entered the digital SLR market with the launch of the Alpha A100. It did have something of a head start by taking over all of Konica-Minolta’s existing technology, but the current success of the Sony Alpha DSLR range is due to Sony’s innovation, design and clever marketing strategy. Sony now occupies third place in the DSLR market, behind Canon and Nikon, having surpassed industry veterans such as Pentax, Olympus and Fujifilm.

The Sony alpha range currently consists of eight models, ranging from the entry-level A290 to the full-frame professional A900. Launched in January this year the Alpha A450 sits in the middle of the range, and is aimed at intermediate-level photographers, or those who are upgrading from and older entry-level model such as the A230.

The NEX-5 and its sister camera the NEX-3 represent Sony’s debut into the rapidly-growing compact system camera market. Since the launch of the Panasonic Lumx G1  just under two years ago demonstrated that it was possible to have the versatility, performance and picture quality of a digital SLR in a smaller form factor, more and more manufacturers have jumped on the bandwagon. Olympus, Samsung and Ricoh (GXR review coming soon) have all launched cameras with compact bodies and interchangeable lenses.

However Sony has trumped them all with the smallest compact system camera yet. The NEX-5 features a full-size APS-C 14.2-megapixel sensor, a large articulated 7.5cm monitor and full 1080p HD video with stereo audio, with a body not much bigger than a standard compact camera.

Out of all of the thousands of reviews posted on TrustedReviews over the years, the one that has been viewed the most times, and by a surprisingly large margin, is the review of the Panasonic FZ38  super-zoom which I wrote last July. Bearing that in mind I’m fairly sure there’ll be quite a few people who will be interested in today’s review, because I’m taking a look at the FZ38′s successor, the new Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ45, which was launched this July.

Just as the FZ38 was an incremental upgrade from the previous year’s FZ28, the FZ45 has many similarities to the previous model, but also a number of significant improvements. The two most obvious changes are the lens, which is increased from an 18x zoom to a larger f/2.8–5.2 24x zoom equivalent to 25 – 600mm, and the sensor, which is still a small 1 /2.33-inch chip but has had a resolution increase from 12.1 to 14.1 megapixels. The SLR-like body design hasn’t changed much since the FZ7 launched in 2006, although the new camera is slightly larger and somewhat heavier than the FZ38, and has seen a major revision to the control layout. The fixed wide-view LCD monitor is also slightly larger, expanding from 2.7 inches to 3.0 inches, but retaining the same 230k resolution. Most of the FZ38′s main features have been retained, particularly its 1280 x 720 HD video mode with stereo audio and AVCHD Lite recording format.

The Canon EF 14mm f/2.8 USM L II is the widest full format lens in the Canon EOS lens lineup. Within its native format it covers a whopping field-of-view of 114 degrees. This is a bit beyond most ultra-wide applications for mainstream users but sometimes there’s simply a need for such special effect lenses. The EF 14mm f/2.8 is a rectilinear lens thus distortion-corrected (as opposed to a non-corrected “fisheye” lens).
