What kind of all-in-one printer can you get for £45? If you’re buying Epson, the answer is really quite a reasonable device, but with some shortcomings. At this price, we’re definitely in the home market for the occasional black or colour print and perhaps a few photos from your digital snaps. It might also suit a secondary school student and can, of course, handle colour photocopies as well as printing and scanning.

Although all-in-one machines outstrip sales of single-function printers, there are good reasons why you may not need the extra functions of a combined device. You may already have a flatbed scanner or do very little scanning or copying, or you may be on a restricted budget and buying just what you can afford. At under £60, Canon’s single-function PIXMA iP3600 is more affordable than most all-in-ones, while still offering the economy of separate ink tanks for each colour.

Most of the iP3600 is cased in high-gloss, piano black, which looks good until it starts showing finger marks or scuffs. There’s a simple, silver strip across the front, as a highlight.

Canon numbers its PIXMA MP range of all-in-ones from MP250 to MP990, but the MP560 is only two models away from the top. The MP range is intended for the enthusiast customer, who is more interested in photo prints from an all-in-one than in fax or multi-page copies.

The PIXMA MP560 has the same faux-luxury look of most of the range, with silver sides and scanner lid plus black-coloured edging, back and control panel. The cover of the control panel hides it when the printer is not in use and when folded up reveals a 50mm LCD panel.

A comprehensive set of controls include soft buttons linked to the display and a click-wheel for scrolling through menu options. There are separate buttons for black and colour prints and one to stop the current job. In front are two indicator LEDs and a third labelled Wi-Fi, to indicate wireless activity.

A3 printeren er efterhånden ved at vinde frem herhjemme, både i private hjem, hos fotografer eller andre med behov for store udskrifter. Trustedreviews.com har anmeldt Epson Stylus Photo R1900 der afløser R1800′eren der i en rum tid har været fotografernes kæledægge.

The medium format pro and semi-pro photo print markets are surprisingly well catered for, with machines from Canon and HP. The leaders in the field are Epson, though, and the Stylus Photo R1900, a replacement for the very popular Stylus Photo R1800, needs to be a class act.

Very few medium and wide carriage printers are what you’d call beautiful, but Epson has tried to keep things simple with a few well-chosen curves in the R1900’s elongated body. In an attempt to keep the overall footprint of the machine down, both the feed and output trays are heavily telescoped in three sections. If you only occasionally print on papers up to A3+, the maximum the printer supports, you can reduce the telescoping and with it the size of the printer.

If you don’t believe us, witness the Epson Stylus Photo R2880 and its new UltraChrome K3 ink system. It uses a mammoth eight colours, including a ‘vivid’ magenta, two grey inks and a choice of blacks, making it ideal semi-professional and professional photo printing.

This is an A3+ printer and given the maximum paper width of 13-inch, it’s not an unduly wide machine. With all its trays open, it’s 415mm deep, so you’ll need a fair sized desk, but if you only occasionally print on large sheets, you can keep the three-stage telescopic feed and output trays partly closed and still print.

What would you expect to pay for a basic all-in-one printer, with flatbed scanner, good quality black and colour copying and plain and photo print? Canon’s PIXMA MP270 is available at just less than £40 from several online retailers, which is less than any other all-in-one we’ve tested.

The neatly-styled black and very light grey box follows the lines of Canon’s other PIXMA MP machines. A slight curve to its vertical edges gives it a modern, functional look. The flatbed scanner uses a Contact Image Sensor (CIS) scanning head, which means it’s particularly slim and doesn’t add much to the overall height of the machine.
